The Struggle With Modern Dating

Does dating feel like an exhausting cycle oscillating between hope and disappointment? Maybe you've tried the dating apps, met people through friends, or even had a few relationships that seemed promising—only to find yourself back at square one still without a partner. Each new connection brings hope, but after repeated ghosting, rejection, or relationships that never quite become what you hoped, it's easy to wonder if lasting love will ever happen for you.

The Emotional Toll of Dating

You may oscillate between “trying” to date, and then having periods where you’re intentionally not dating because you feel that it negatively affects your mental health. You feel motivated and hopeful and go on dates, strike up conversation with someone new, and tell yourself you’re really going to put yourself out there. Then something disappointing happens like being ghosted, an awkward date, or someone telling you “I️’m not ready for a relationship” which then sends you into deleting the apps, stopping dating, and avoiding it for months before starting to try again.

When it Affects Your Confidence

You’ve had endless conversations with family and friends about this struggle, and now keep it mostly to yourself. You’ve even gone so far as to question if there’s something wrong with you or something that others don’t like about you. You see others moving forward in relationships and you compare yourself to their timelines. Over time, it becomes harder to stay hopeful. Dating begins to feel less exciting and more like another area of life where you're falling behind.

You wonder whether everyone else received a roadmap to adulthood that somehow skipped you. You feel deeply alone and aren’t sure how to channel the feelings of loneliness so you distract yourself and try to make the most of your time, but those feelings are still gnawing away at you.

When You're Struggling to Identify if They are "The One"

Many clients who are in relationships also struggle with decision fatigue about moving relationships forward. In the modern dating world where options feel endless, many people are asking themselves, “How do I️ know they are the one?”, “Should I️ keep looking,” or, “Am I️ settling?”. Having someone to help you discern those complex thoughts and decisions can be comforting and freeing so you can move forward with peace and confidence.

How Therapy Can Help

Dating isn't simply about finding the right person—it's also about understanding yourself, your values, your relationship patterns, and how anxiety, past experiences, or discouragement may be affecting the way you show up. My goal isn't to help you become someone different to attract a partner. It's to help you become the healthiest, most authentic version of yourself while approaching dating with confidence, wisdom, and hope. Whether you meet your future spouse next month or a year from now, my goal is to help you grow, become more secure, and build a fulfilling life in the meantime.

Here are the steps I️ take with clients struggling with dating:

- Explore your relationship history and identify potential patterns without judgment.

- Get clear on your values so you're pursuing relationships that are aligned with the life you want to build and your deepest core self.

- Process any hurt, disappointment, or rejection that may be affecting your confidence with dating.

- Identify practical ways to meet people in environments that fit your interests and values.

- Evaluate your dating app approach if you're using one.

- Build communication skills and confidence for first dates, vulnerability, and difficult conversations.

Help you stay grounded through the ups and downs of dating so that one disappointing experience doesn't taint your outlook or lead to resistance towards dating altogether.
